Vetiver roots for essential oil

Haitian Vetiver: The World’s Most Coveted Scent?

There’s a good chance you’ve encountered Haitian vetiver before. You know that earthy, musky, almost smoky richness that lingers at the base of a lot of high-end fragrances? That, my friend, is vetiver. And there’s a very good chance it came from Haiti.

Haiti distills and exports about half of the world’s vetiver essential oil supply, more than any other country. It’s a staple of some of the finest fragrance houses. Think Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Armani, to name a few.

So, What Makes It So Coveted?

Haitian vetiver has earned its reputation and then some. Traditionally, it’s been ‘the scent of masculinity’—the backbone of luxury men’s cologne for decades. But if you ask me, fragrance has no gender. And neither does this oil.

Haitian vetiver smells like the countryside at dusk. It’s rich, earthy, smoky, with a warm nutty-powdery finish. It’s deeply grounding. But not all vetiver smells the same; the scent varies significantly depending on where it grows.

The Difference Between Haitian Vetiver and Every Other Vetiver Out There

Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a perennial grass native to India. The word itself comes from the Tamil vettivēru, meaning “root that is dug up.” It’s been cultivated and traded for centuries, but its most powerful expression is found in southern Haiti.

Haitian vetiver grows in the plains of Les Cayes, a large seaport city in the south. There, the Caribbean humidity combined with mineral-rich soil and tropical heat produce an oil that distinctly its own.

Less leathery and drier than other types of vetiver. Fresher, greener, and slightly herbal.

Why Haitian Vetiver Is the Heartbeat of Pao Apothecary

“Vetiver grows where nothing grows.” — heard in a Port-au-Prince market, 2009 (Le Sourceur)

Vetiver’s benefits are undeniable. Calming. Deeply restorative. Which is exactly why it shows up in almost everything we make at Pao. Our very own signature, a quiet nod to home.

In aromatherapy, this oil is primarily used to help ground the nervous system, boost self-confidence, and overall well-being. And honestly, it’s incredibly sexy. The kind of scent that makes you want to slow down and revel in it.

It’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to quiet the mind. In a 2015 study published in Natural Product Research, inhaling vetiver essential oil produced anxiety-reducing effects comparable to diazepam, the medication usually prescribed for anxiety.

We Love It So Much, We Built an Entire Collection Around It

Haitian vetiver is personal to us. It’s the foundation of our entire brand. You’ll find it threaded through almost every product, but our Lakay roll-on is where it lives alone.
